The city proper got its start as a small group of homes around the newly created University. The incorporation of University Park as a town came after the University could no longer fulfill the demand for utilities that it was supplying. The residents applied for annexation by both Highland Park and Dallas, and the requests were turned down. This led to the formation of University Park on April 12 of 1924.
